Montana Cannabis Workers

There are many steps to take in order to apply for a Montana State Cannabis Worker's Permit.  Below are steps needed, in order of how they should be completed.  If you have any questions, please send us a message at the Contact Us link above.

Step 1:  Obtain the SIGNED CONSENT TO FINGERPRINT FORM on the Montana Department of Revenue website.

Step 2:  Get your fingerprints taken & sent to the State. You do not need to take the Fingerprint Form you downloaded from the first step.  Fill out the form and have it ready to upload into the TAP system.

  • If you are in the Billings area, we recommend Billings Fingerprints, schedule a time by CLICKING HERE or contact 406-860-3568.

Step 3:  Take the 2 required online courses, they are linked on the Dept of Rev website (80% passing grade required), and save your passing certificates in order to upload into the TAP system:

  • Identifying, Preventing, and Reporting Human Trafficking

  • Rules & Regulations: Legal Sales of Marijuana in Montana

Step 4:  Get a photo taken of yourself, head and shoulders, with no hat or dark glasses, no dark background - very similar to your state driver's license or ID photo.

Step 5:  Once you have all of the above ready to upload into the portal, go to

the TransAction Portal (TAP) but DO NOT attempt to log in.  Instead, scroll

down until you see the Cannabis Control area, select Apply for or Manage a

Marijuana Worker Permit:

Step 6:  Select the applicable option (apply, renew, replace, submit requested documents, or update worker information) and

complete the information required in the application.

NOTE:   When you get to the page to upload your documents, the system says you only need 1 document for the course completion certificates but you will need to upload 2, one for each course passed.

I submitted my request in late February of 2022 and received my permit in the mail approximately 2-2.5 weeks later.  The State also called to ask if I was planning to work for a Testing Lab, which I am not.  I believe their background checks are a little different so don't say yes unless that is your plan.

Welcome to the Montana Cannabis Industry!
